One Header beats Ten Opponents – Reliving Hong Kong’s Football Legacy with Passion!
In the summer of 1936, China participated in the Olympics for the first time with a football team largely composed of players from Hong Kong. Led by Asia’s Football King, Lee Wai-tong, a group of passionate local players from Lo Wai, a small fishing village in Tai Hang, Hong Kong, joined forces with players from China to form the national team. They prepared for the event and raised funds during a highly successful tour of Southeast Asia.
Amidst national turmoil, war, conflicts and disparity between class and identity, ideals and reality, and city and community, not to mention the financial struggles of football clubs, a group of fervent young footballers persevered on the field of their dreams. With faith and determination to overcome adversity, they showcased their signature move – the Ding Tau Chui (header). Their resilience led them to the Berlin Olympics in Germany, making history as the first Chinese national football team to compete on the international stage.
